Our Story

Founded in Santa Barbara, California in 1973, and incorporated in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1981, Satzinger Design has specialized in custom homes, residential developments and exclusive commercial projects for over 50 years. Company founder James Satzinger AIA is currently a semi-retired sole practitioner, licensed in New Mexico and Oregon; he holds an NCARB Certificate, facilitating licensure as architect in any state of the nation and province of Canada. Satzinger has been licensed as architect in California, New Mexico, Oregon and Hawaii, licensed as general contractor in California and New Mexico, and has been a LEED certificate holder.

Satzinger’s understanding of the entire design and building process provides for comprehensive analysis of land acquisition, thoughtful site planning, creative building design and superb detailing, and produces projects of character and environmental sensitivity. Sustainable design and construction practices utilizing local materials, high-performance building envelopes, storm water collection and active and passive solar systems has resulted in USGBC LEED Gold Certification on some projects and a Build Green New Mexico Emerald Certification for Casa Carolina in 2014.

“Each project begins with the site, with the placement of buildings and landscape elements utilizing and enhancing the natural environment, maximizing the interplay between interior and exterior living spaces, providing shelter and outlook. With client specific program and design requirements we together create a living environment unique in style and appropriate to its time and space.”
